The 1990's: A Decade of
Telecommunications Revolution

The 1990's was a decade for the world of telecommunication. Everything in the Western World the United States and Europe was evolving in some way by this technological revolution, GSM mobile phones for the first time were available for many who were from America & Europe, and the innovation of this technology was available at a cost to the public where the caller and the receiver had to pay a price per minute which was initially set by regulators & the licence mobile operators in those regions.

In the year of 1995 making a long-distance phone call from western Europe to the rest of the world was expensive and this was due to telecom companies holding monopolies that allowed the incumbent operators to charge high rates. The EU Commission pushed for market liberalization to drive down the prices.

During this period of time a young Sikh Gentlemen Mr. Ranjit Singh Masuta a resident from Basel / Switzerland who was initially involved in trading scrap metal business, this initiated him to make international calls to several destinations making direct calls via mobile phones were very expensive therefore he used another method known as callback service that reduced the calling cost per minute and increased the calling time while he was saving money for international telephone calls an idea was born to introduce the similar services to the public by developing a software for the Telephone Shops also known has call shops with cabins in main cities in Switzerland and rest of the neighboring European cities. This helped many of the cosmopolitan residents and the tourists to walk in and make discounted long-distance telephone calls at an affordable price to their families, friends and business clients living in APAC, Africa, LATAM, CALA Region, EU, Middle East & to the USA.

Establishment of D.M Enterprise Telephone Shop

D.M Enterprise GmbH Telephone shop was first of its kind to be opened in 1995 at SBB Bahnhof Basel Unterführung ( Basel Railway Station underground). The Discount International Telephone shop consisted of 12 wooden cabins which were designed for the customers to dial and have a relaxed conversation to their home countries. The need for making a discount long distance international calls was on the rise and therefore the second call shop was opened at Claragraben, Basel from there onwards branches were opened in Basel and other commercial and touristic cities throughout Switzerland. The call shops had its own real time billing software which helped the customers to see the name of the calling country, dialed number, call begin, Call end duration of minutes plus seconds spoken and the total amount. The Call-Shop Solutions and Real Time Billing Software was developed by Mr. Roland Schenk & Team from AVC Schenk & Biesuz GmbH based in Switzerland

Recognition and Collaboration with U.S. Companies

Once the Long Distance Int'l Discount Telephone Shop became a success model the US based Telecom Carriers visited Switzerland and after meeting Ranjit Singh Masuta who was the early starter in call shop solutions they wanted to have a joint venture operations of the identical discount Telephone shop model with cabins and call shop solutions in the USA and Europe. This idea and partnership model between the US based Telecom Carriers and Mr.Ranjit Singh Masuta was published in a news article called Newsweek Magazine USA in the month of 1997.

In 1997, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) based in Geneva, Switzerland held the ITU Exhibition which was called "TELECOM Interactive 97". The event took place from September 8 to 14, 1997. It was described as the "world's first interactive multimedia forum and exhibition". D.M Enterprises of Switzerland had the opportunity to directly register with ITU and participate in the Forums & Exhibition. This was an eye opener for us by meeting various companies and innovative people to explore more on the Telecommunications related subjects. A key focus was the Internet and its relationship with the telecommunications industry. The ITU published a report to coincide with the exhibition titled Challenges to the Network: Telecoms and the Internet 1997. There were 215 exhibitors from sectors including telecommunications, computing, broadcasting, and entertainment. The event attracted 20,000 plus telecommunications professionals. In addition to corporate and national pavilions, the exhibition included a cybercafé and a cyber-forum for discussions Magazine USA in the month of 1997.

Telecommunications Liberalization in Switzerland

European regulations required that the liberalization of the national Telecommunications market in most European countries completed on 1 January 1998. In Switzerland the end of the PTT monopoly process began with the Telecommunications Enterprise Act of 1997, which fully deregulated the Swiss market for telecommunications. This legislation dissolved the PTT, the state-owned Postal, Telephone, and Telegraph services that had existed since 1920. Effective January 1, 1998, the PTT was officially split into two separate, state-owned companies Swisscom Ltd-The new, publicly limited telecommunications company that would operate in the liberalized market and Swiss Post-The separate institution responsible for postal and financial services. Switzerland's mobile phone network was digitized under the name NATEL D in 1992, and by 1997, digital GSM service was widespread. This provided a foundation for the significant growth that followed deregulation.

Global Line Holding of Switzerland had the opportunity to directly register with ITU and participate in the Forums & Exhibition this was an eye opener for us by meeting multiple companies who was engaged in wireless Communications, Mobile device manufactures from Japan & S.Korea, Pre-Paid Calling Cards & Telecom Carrier Switch vendors, Incumbent operators, Tier one carries, Telecom Regulators and VVIP guests from different parts of the world. By attending the Telecom 1999 forum we had the opportunity of witnessing the Interactive Summit opening which was marked by keynotes from Bill Gates, Chairman and CEO of Microsoft Corporation, Seiko Noda, Member of Japan's House of Representatives, and Larry Ellison, Chairman and CEO of Oracle. Jorma Ollila, President and CEO of Nokia, spoke on "new directions of interactivity and the Internet", Scott McNealy, Chairman and CEO, Sun Microsystems, focused on questions of "access and distribution for multimedia applications". A number of themes dominated Telecom 99. On the one hand was the promise of a better-connected world in the new millennium. On the other were the shadows of an information gap threatening that promise. Much of the focus was on wireless technology and the Internet. In particular, wireless access to the Internet was at the heart of business strategies of most telecommunication and information technology (IT) companies. Over 200,000 visitors and more than 1,000 exhibitors from 48 countries attended the event.

The event attracted top leaders from government Ministers and Ambassadors to Chief Executive Officers (CEO) of front-ranked market players, as well as the most respected industry analysts and commentators. More than 4000 people took part in the Forum programme, which encompassed a total of five summits and a number of combined sessions.

The World Telecom Network (WTN) was established in 1999 as a visionary international telecommunications initiative conceived during ITU Telecom ’99 in Geneva, Switzerland, with the objective of building an independent global carrier network capable of supporting the next generation of international communications. Among the key figures behind this initiative was Ranjit Singh Masuta, whose strategic vision, entrepreneurial leadership, and technical expertise played an important role in shaping the foundation of WTN. Working alongside an experienced international team, he contributed to the development of a carrier-grade infrastructure designed to interconnect telecom operators across multiple countries, reducing dependence on traditional incumbent networks while delivering faster, more reliable, and cost-effective global connectivity. WTN combined advanced switching technologies, strategic carrier partnerships, and direct international interconnections to create a seamless telecommunications platform capable of handling large volumes of international voice and data traffic. Officially commencing operations in the fourth quarter of 1999, WTN represented a significant milestone in the evolution of global telecommunications. It reflected the vision of industry pioneers like Ranjit Singh Masuta, whose commitment to innovation, international collaboration, and infrastructure development helped lay the foundation for a modern, interconnected telecom ecosystem that would support businesses and communications worldwide in the new millennium.

In 1998 Global Line International Prepaid Calling Card brand became a recognized product within the cosmopolitan people, tourist and locals due to its success in Switzerland and post liberalization of telecommunications market in EU the expansion of this calling card product was available by deploying the latest state of the art calling card switching technology and infrastructure within the tele-houses based in France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and in the UK. The Tele-House Colocation & Interconnections services were provided by Colt Europe and New Telco Germany. The Brand name "Global LINE" Prepaid Calling Card was marketed under the registered company name Global Line GmbH within Switzerland. The identical business model was created by incorporating the companies in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, UK and also by signing sales & purchase agreements with third party retail outlets to distribute the brand across Europe.

World Telecom Network provided telecom services to hard to reach destinations by building its own Pops in Africa, Asia, LATAM region and these V-Sat pops were connected via teleports which were located in France, Germany and Switzerland. Due to its next generation telecom infrastructure model, WTN was able to trade in retail, wholesale minutes and SMS. This project was successful by entering into partnership with Gen-Sat France & Red Cube Switzerland

A Solemn Gathering of Faith, Remembrance, and International Friendship

In Remembrance, In Unity, In Peace. These photographs bear witness to a solemn interfaith commemoration convened at the Sikh Gurdwara Sahib Langenthal (4900), Switzerland, held in sacred remembrance of the victims of the tragic attack perpetrated in 2012 at the Sikh Temple in Wisconsin, United States of America. That heinous act of violence, carried out within the sanctity of a place of worship, reverberated profoundly across the conscience of humanity and grievously afflicted the Sikh Nation worldwide. Innocent lives were taken in circumstances that defied all principles of civilised society, religious tolerance, and human dignity.

In the wake of this tragedy, the Government of the United States of America conveyed its deepest condolences and stood in resolute solidarity with the global Sikh community. Across nations and continents, gestures of mourning, remembrance, and respect were observed, affirming a collective commitment to peace, pluralism, and interfaith concord.

The commemorative gathering in Langenthal was conducted in an atmosphere of solemn reflection, spiritual unity, and diplomatic goodwill. Religious leaders, representatives of diverse faith traditions, members of the Sangat, civic dignitaries, and honoured guests assembled in shared purpose: to pay homage to the departed souls and to reaffirm our unwavering dedication to harmony among peoples and nations.

We were deeply privileged by the presence of the Honourable Donald S. Beyer Jr., Ambassador of the United States of America to the Swiss Confederation, representing the United States Embassy in Bern. His esteemed participation stood as a dignified expression of solidarity, compassion, and the enduring bonds of friendship between the United States and the Sikh community, as well as between our respective societies.

The land to build a holy shrine (Gurdwara) in Langenthal, Switzerland was acquired in 1999. The foundation stone for the first Holy Shrine for the Sikhs 'Gurdwara Sahib' was laid by Hon Shri Dharam Singh Masuta on the 11th of January 2001 and thereafter the Gurudwara Sahib was jointly opened by the Home Minister of Kanton Bern head of the Police & Military Directorate & Mayor of Langenthal Hon Shri Mr. Hans-Jürg Käser and Hon Shri Dharam Singh Masuta in 23rd of September 2006. The total cost for the construction of this Holy Shrine Gurdwara Sahib Langenthal was donated by a humble brotherhood from all walks of life along with devotees, well wishers, private institutions and corporates.

Ranjit Singh Masuta is the first Sikh in Switzerland. He is the person who initiated the idea and to build the first Gurdwara Sahib which is situated at Langenthal in Switzerland, constructed in traditional Sikh architectural style – a unique landmark in all of Europe. Ranjit Singh Masuta is the leader of the Sikh community in Switzerland.

Historic Tribute to Sikh Soldiers at Menin Gate

On 2 May 2024, we had the honour of attending a historic remembrance ceremony in Belgium to pay tribute to the Sikh and Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War I. The ceremony took place near the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, one of the most important World War I remembrance sites in Europe. Every evening, the famous Last Post Ceremony is held there, where buglers play the Last Post to honour fallen soldiers. This tradition has been performed almost every day since 1928 as a symbol of respect and remembrance. During the ceremony, three buglers sounded the Last Post, followed by wreath laying to honour the martyrs who fought and died in Flanders Fields. The ceremony represents a final farewell and respect for soldiers who gave their lives for peace and freedom.

On this historic day, Ranjit Singh Masuta had the privilege to be present along with Singh Sahib Giani Harpreet Singh Ji, representing the Sikh community. Together, flowers were offered as a mark of respect and gratitude to the brave Sikh and Indian soldiers who fought far from their homeland. During World War I, thousands of soldiers from British India, including many Sikhs, fought in the Ypres region. Many lost their lives in some of the most intense battles in history, and today their sacrifice continues to be remembered by people from around the world. This moment represents remembrance, unity, faith, and respect for the martyrs who gave their lives for humanity and peace. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.

The monument at Hollebeek where Sikh soldiers were deployed in 1914 was unveiled on April 4, 1999. To honor 300 years of Khalsa and the sacrifice of Sikh soldiers during World War I, the City of Ieper together with the European Sikh Community organized a Celebration of Peace on Sunday 4 April 1999 at Cloth Hall in Ieper, Belgium.

Kartarpur Sahib – From Tears to a Corridor of Peace

Kartarpur Sahib holds the highest spiritual importance in Sikh history, as it is the sacred land where Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent the longest period of his life. It was here that Guru Nanak Dev Ji lived as a farmer, served humanity, and established a way of life based on equality, seva, and unity. Kartarpur Sahib is not only a historical site but the very foundation of Sikh living, where the principles of Kirat Narni, Vand Chakna, and Naam Japna were practiced in their truest form. For Sikhs across the world, it remains a direct spiritual connection to Guru Nanak Dev Ji and is often regarded as one of the most sacred centers of faith.

It is also understood as a great blessing that such seva was bestowed upon Bhai Ranjit Singh Masuta, whose connection with this sacred land became part of a larger journey that cannot be fully described in words, but only understood through its depth and impact.

In the year 2000, Ranjit Singh Masuta stepped onto the sacred land of Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur for the first time. That moment cannot be described in words. It was not just a visit, but a spiritual awakening. His heart was filled with peace, love, and a deep sense of connection, but within moments that peace turned into unbearable pain as he witnessed the condition of the sacred place.

After the Partition of 1947, Kartarpur Sahib had been left behind, separated from a large part of the Sikh community. Over time, the site became closed, the buildings fell into deterioration, and the land surrounding it was left in neglect. The sacred space that once echoed with sangat, seva, and the presence of Guru Nanak Dev Ji stood in silence. Historical features of the land, including old wells, had gone beneath the soil and were no longer visible. The entire environment reflected abandonment rather than reverence. Standing on that sacred soil, the reality of the situation deeply affected him. The question that arose was simple yet powerful — how could the home of Guru Nanak Dev Ji be left in such a condition. That moment became a turning point.

In that same moment, alongside his family, Bhai Sahib Veer Ji, Bhai Sham Singh Ji, and with the support of General Javed Nasser, a heartfelt Ardaas was performed. It was not planned or formal, but came from within. That Ardaas marked the beginning of a journey. A journey that was not based on words, but on commitment, faith, and sustained effort.

With Waheguru’s Kirpa, the first steps were taken. Land around Kartarpur Sahib was gradually secured, not for profit or personal gain, but as part of a larger effort of preservation and seva. Step by step, year by year, this effort continued with consistency and determination, eventually reaching nearly 105 acres of land. This was not a project or a business initiative, but a long-term commitment rooted in faith and responsibility.

The seva was carried out in a practical and meaningful way. Farming began on the land, following the same path that Guru Nanak Dev Ji himself had practiced during his time at Kartarpur. The fields were cultivated, tractors were brought in, and agricultural activity was re-established. Cattle were nurtured, and the land once again became active and productive.

Alongside this, religious practices were restored and maintained. Langar was started and served for all without discrimination, reflecting the true spirit of Sikh tradition. Daily Parkash of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was established, and a permanent Granthi Singh was appointed to ensure continuity of maryada. They came with respect, they stood together, they prayed together, and they shared Langar together. The environment reflected unity rather than division, and the message of Guru Nanak Dev Ji — humanity above all — became visible in practice.

What began in the year 2000 as a deeply emotional moment and a simple Ardaas developed into a long journey of faith, struggle, seva, and belief. Over the years, Kartarpur Sahib gradually regained attention and importance, eventually leading to the creation of the Kartarpur Corridor.

Today, the Kartarpur Corridor stands as a historic reality, allowing thousands of devotees to visit daily and millions annually from across the world. It is not only a physical passage, but a connection between people, faith, and shared heritage. It represents access, continuity, and the revival of a sacred link that had remained separated for decades.

Kartarpur Sahib today stands not only as a place of history, but as a living example of faith in action. It reflects how dedication, seva, and sustained effort can contribute to preserving heritage and reconnecting generations with their spiritual roots.
